Acer Bows WiMAX-Enabled Notebooks

By Colleen Bohen -- TWICE, 10/8/2008

Baltimore — Acer America has introduced its first WiMAX-enabled laptops, motivated by Xohm’s move last week to launch the nation’s first WiMAX wireless broadband network, here.

WiMAX subscribers in the Baltimore area will now be able to access free-range wireless connectivity by using Acer’s Aspire 4930-6862 and the Aspire 4930-6771.

“With the launch of WiMAX in the United States, Acer is building on its commitment to deliver first-to-market cutting-edge PC technology for mobile customers,” said Sumit Agnihotry, notebook product management director for Acer America. “By leveraging Intel Centrino 2 mobile technology and the Xohm wireless network capabilities, users will have the availability for anytime, anywhere wireless connectivity. The Acer Aspire notebooks provide users with a perfect combination of mobile and multimedia functionality.”

According to Acer, the new Intel Centrino 2-based notebooks feature the combined WiMAX/Wi-Fi module previously codenamed “Echo Peak,” part of the Intel WiMAX/Wi-Fi Link 5050 Series.

The 4930-6862 features a 14-inch widescreen, and the Aspire 6930-6711 has a 16-inch widescreen that offers a 16:9 aspect ratio. Both come with 3GB of memory and a 320GB hard drive. They each also feature a Super Multi double-layer drive, a five-in-one digital media card reader, an integrated Web cam, Dolby Home Theater sound and come packaged with Windows Vista Premium. According to a release, both models will carry suggested retails of $899.

The WiMAX-enabled models are said to be available through Newegg.com and TigerDirect.com.
