Jasc Intros New Imaging Software

Eden Prairie, Minn. — Jasc Software introduced the fifth version of its Paint Shop Photo Album program, which is targeted toward the growing market of digital photo scrap-bookers and mainstream camera owners in search of organizing software.
Jasc’s Photo Album 5 will offer a host of improvements over previous versions, said Jennifer Kellogg, product marketing manager, Jasc Software. Upgrades include a new, tab-based user interface to better segment the program’s editing, organizing and 17 sharing features. Jasc also added more photo projects for the "digital scrapbooker," an automatic archiving function called PhotoSafe that will prompt users to burn photo CDs to back up their digital photos, and an e-mail-to-cellphone setting that automatically resizes digital photos for sending pictures to Internet-enabled cellphones.
Thanks to a partnership with MyPublisher.com, Photo Album 5 users can create bound hard cover photo books from 10 pages to 100 pages using templates and layouts in the program. The completed file is then uploaded to MyPublisher for production.
Other photo projects include greeting cards, printable photo album pages, calendars, e-cards and photo CD labels.
According to Kellogg, Jasc was keen to offer an automatic photo archiving solution because of the rapidly expanding base of novice digital photographers "who are not familiar with hard drive crashes" that could potentially erase entire collections of digital images.
The software’s PhotoSafe Archiving System will automatically prompt a user to burn a CD of all un-archived photos stored on the hard-drive. The software automatically tracks which photos have previously been burned to a CD and which haven’t. The CD can be burned with two clicks, Kellogg said, and a thumbnail library of all the images stored on the CD is saved in the program so consumers can review what photos are stored on a specific CD without having to actually insert the disk into the computer.
Photo Album 5 will be available in two retail SKUs. A deluxe version, for $49.99, will ship with a third-party photo recovery software, Avery photo paper and CD labels. A home version for $29.99 will be slightly defeatured and ship without the extras, Kellogg said.
