New HD Radio Chip Debuts for Factory Radios
by Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 8/13/2008
Eindhoven, Netherlands — HD Radio developer iBiquity said that a new chip will be available from NXP Semiconductors that will reduce the cost of providing HD Radio in new cars.
The chip allows many worldwide digital radio broadcast technologies, including HD Radio, to coexist on a single chip, streamlining costs to auto makers who must serve a global market, where standards are different depending on the continent or country.
Digital radio technologies in Europe and Asia include DAB/DRM/T-DMB, which are supported on the new chip. The NXT chip also supports iTunes Tagging, that lets users bookmark favorite songs by pressing a button on the radio. These automatically appear in one’s iTunes account for review or purchase.
The new SAV3560 chip also supports DAB+ and allows software upgradeability.

What a farce - automakers expect synergies, as with Satellite Radio, to get en-mass in-dash. It doesn't matter, if the chips cost $10/each + installation, if 5,000,000 HD radios cost an automaker $50,000,000 to install. That's why HD Radio tried to force itself into Satrad receivers:
"Ibiquity Fears Open Access Will Not Help Adoption Of HD Radio" "I have said it before, and I will say it again. HD Radio has a responsibility to market itself. They should not be out looking for business model hand-outs. They should not be trying to circumvent negotiations with OEM’s by getting into car dashboards on the backs of the negotiations that Sirius and XM have made, and by extension, on the backs of shareholders in the SDARS companies."
