Aftermarket Autosound Sales Decline In '01, May Remain Flat

After several years of growth, aftermarket autosound sales fell 3.2 percent last year, according to CEA estimates. This compares to growth of five percent in 2000 and 11 percent in 1999.

Aftermarket sales fell from a factory value of $2.169 billion to $2.10 billion in 2001 while OEM sales rose 5.6 percent to $2.85 billion, up from $2.7 billion in 1999, CEA said.

Total autosound sales for OEM and aftermarket combined gained 1.7 percent and are expected to climb another 2 percent next year, according to CEA forecasts. Aftermarket sales for 2002 are expected to remain flat and OEM sales are expected to jump 3.5 percent.

In individual categories tracked by CEA, mobile video, not surprisingly, showed the highest growth, up 38 percent on factory sales of $690 million, up from $500 million. It is expected grow another 34.8 percent in 2002 to $930 million.

Radar detectors showed flat sales this year at $170 million and will decline by a hefty 21.2 percent next year, by CEA forecasts. Conversely, car security sales jumped this year by 22 percent to $266 million and are expected to show flat sales, or negative .4 percent growth in 2002, CEA said.
