Digital Imaging Builds Its Presence At PMA

By TWICE Staff -- TWICE, 1/24/2000

Digital photography's presence will continue to expand at the 2000 Photo Marketing Association (PMA) show next month in Las Vegas, where 80 exhibitors are expected to show consumer or professional digital cameras, including JVC, which is re-entering the digital still camera market.

The growing influence digital products are having on the show and the industry is evident in the fact that 275 of the 800 total exhibitors will display either digital products or accessories at this year's show, said a PMA spokesman. The association estimates that 30,000 people will attend the 76-year-old show, running February 3-6 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

JVC is expected to introduce the 3.3-megapixel GC-QX3 digital camera. The camera will carry a sub-$1,000 suggested retail price and will ship in February, said Jerry Barbera, JVC's video division general manager.

The camera is the first in what will be a line of JVC digital cameras. It features a SmartMedia card for image storage and has what Barbera describes as a professional still mode that essentially double-exposes a photo to deliver a

6 million-pixel image.

The camera will come bundled with new proprietary compression software that will allow users to take and e-mail a 200Kb, 20-second video clip. When the clip is e-mailed the compression software is sent along so the receiver can quickly download and view the video.

The GC-QX3 represents JVC's second attempt to break into this market. Several years ago the company introduced a camera but then pulled out of the market.
