Gateway Unveils eMachine Desktops, Notebooks

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 1/25/2006

Irvine, Calif. — Gateway rolled out its winter PC line introducing five eMachine-branded desktop and notebook computers.

With this rollout Gateway focused on improving graphics capability with the inclusion of NVIDIA GeForce 6100 graphic cards throughout the desktop line while sticking with the ATI Radeon X300 for the notebook. The desktop also has a PCI Express slot so consumers can further upgrade the unit’s graphics capability after purchase.

The lone notebook introduction, which will sell exclusively through Wal-Mart, is the W4620. It is configured around a 15-inch XGA Ultrabright display and is powered by an AMD Turion 64 Mobile processor. It features 512MB of DDR memory, an 80GB hard drive, a dual-format double-layer DVD burner and internal 802.11g wireless networking. The unit weighs 5.5 pounds and carries a $895 suggested retail.

The desktop line, now shipping with post-$50 rebate suggested prices ranging from $349 to $549, starts at the top with the T6420 Media Center PC. Features include an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ processor, 2GB of DDR memory (expandable to 4GB), 200GB hard drive and 6.1-channel surround sound. For a $50 drop in price eMachines is offering the T6216. Its feature set differs by including an Athlon 64 3200+ processor, 512MB of memory, 160GB hard drive and its operates on Windows XP.

Closing out the line are the T3410 and T3304. The former, $399, has an AMD Sempron 3400+ processor and a CD-RW/DVD drive, but is otherwise similar to the higher end models. The entry-level T3304, $349, has a Sempron 3300+ processor, 256MB of memory and a 100GB hard drive.
