New VoomPC Ships At $399

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 2/12/2007

Mini-box.com is shipping a $399 car computer, one of the lowest priced units on the market.

The company announced a new VoomPC-2T series of PCs that can run Windows and Linux. The VoomPCs have automatic shut-off capability so they don't drain the car battery when the car is turned off, because computers consume power even when they are shut down, said Mini-box.com.

The VoomPC must be hard wired to the car's electrical system. It runs on a 1.5Ghz processor and offers VGA, S-Video, USB2.0, Firewire, Ethernet and a PCMCIA type I and type II CardBus interface for GPRS and Wi-Fi. It has been tested to work in extreme temperatures from -40C and to 55C. Mini-box.com also claims the VoomPC has a low-power consumption of 15 watts to 35 watts, which is less than "the dimmest car parking lights."

The unit is sold through the Mini-box.com Web site. Mini-box.com is a subsidiary of Ituner Networks, which specializes in embedded computing and industrial/automotive power solutions.
