D-Link Shipping Pre-N, Powerline Networking Kits

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 11/6/2006

D-Link has started shipping two new home networking systems, the Xtreme N wireless and the Powerline Network Kit.

The DIR-655 Extreme N router is D-Link's latest 802.11n wireless product incorporating the company's pre-N technology. It is joined by the DWA-552 and DWA-652 desktop and notebook adapters which have also started shipping.

The router has three antennas, wireless multimedia support, Universal plug-and-play, WEP, WPA,WPA2 encryption and Gibabit LAN and Gigabit WAN ports. D-Link and most networking vendors have been shipping routers using a version of the 802.11n specification that has not been approved by the IEEE.

The router is carrying a $199 suggested retail and the adapters are priced at $119.

The DHP-301 Powerline Network kit, $219 suggested retail, can send 200MBps second of data per second over a home's electrical grid or enough to stream highdefinition video.

The kit comes with two adapters and is now selling through retail and distribution will expand to include online stores later this year, the company said.
