Lenovo Bows IdeaPad S10 'Netbook'

By Staff -- TWICE, 8/18/2008

Lenovo has introduced its IdeaPad S10 "netbook" PC, a notebook intended to complement a consumer's primary PC or to act as an entry-level machine.

"As rapidly as the technology changes, today's consumers are looking for mobile products that feature the best of basic computing functions in an extremely compact and affordable form, and Lenovo designed the IdeaPad netbooks for that purpose," said Liu Jun, senior VP, consumer business group, Lenovo.

The device allows users to perform such tasks as surfing the Internet, writing emails, listening to music or running basic applications.

The PC features a 10.2-inch screen with an LED back-lit display, said to help extend battery life. The device measures approximately 1 inch thick and weighs just more than 2 pounds. It is available in white, black and red.

The S10 includes Wi-Fi and also has an Express Card slot. Other features include a built-in Web cam, two USB ports and a four-in-one multicard reader.

The model runs on the Intel Atom processor and comes equipped with Microsoft Windows XP. There will be two configurations available at launch, one with 512MB of memory and an 80GB hard drive, the second with 1GB of memory and 160GB hard drive.

According to Lenovo, the models have been designed to reduce the heat emitted on key contact areas such as the bottom of the PC, the palm rest and the keyboard. Also, the company's OneKey Rescue System3 is said to help users recover data with the touch of a button in the event of a system error or virus.

The company said it also plans to introduce specific netbook models for students and educators.

The IdeaPad S10 models will be available in October with prices starting at $399.
