NuVision Ships LED DLP

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 10/26/2006

Scottsdale, Ariz. – High-end video manufacturer NuVision has begun production on its long-awaited 52W-inch 1080p rear-projection DLP set using LED lighting technology.

NuVision said model 52LEDLP, which carries a $4,399 suggested retail price, is on schedule to ship this month.

The company plans to offer a line of larger-screened Deep Black LED DLP televisions to follow next year. The company will showcase the 52W-inch set at the EHX Expo show in Long Beach, Calif., Nov. 15-17 (booth 1127).

The NuVision LED illumination system is based on the “PhlatLight” light source, developed and manufactured by the Luminus Devices.

NuVision’s application of the technology is designed with specialized electronics systems with the goal of creating the ultimate new reference standard in high-performance video reproduction, the company said.

PhlatLight uses a semiconductor RGB LED chipset that produces high color fidelity, a refined grey scale and deeper black levels, NuVision said. The LEDs allowed NuVision designers to create a new light engine design that changes the entire optical architecture that eliminates many of the shortcomings of conventional arc lamp PTV illumination.

Benefits of the system include a lamp life without brightness degradation or bulb replacement; instant on capability; elimination of mercury and other hazardous materials used in conventional UHP lamps; lower power consumption; a wider color gamut; digitally controlled color balance and adjustable white point; elimination of a color wheel from DLP systems, high brightness and contrast performance (500 nits and 5,000:1, respectively).

The sets incorporate ATSC, NTSC and clear QAM tuners; and xHD4 1080p DLP chip, two HDMI/HDCP inputs; two auto detect multi-scan component video inputs; and bi-directional RS-232 port.

NuVision is targeting distribution through the CEDIA custom install channel and high-end A/V specialty retailers.
