AHAM Reports Sales Chilled in December

By Tedra Meyer -- TWICE, 1/29/2001

WASHINGTON - Factory shipments of major cooking appliances continued to head south in December, falling 4.4 percent below the same month last year, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).

December's numbers served as salt in the industry's wound, following an October fall of 11.1 percent in factory sales and November's negligible recovery of 1.4 percent, compared with the same periods in 1999.

AHAM reported 5.6 million units shipped in December 2000, compared with 5.9 million the previous December. However, year-end totals increased in all categories, with 65 million units shipping, 3.7 percent more than in 1999.

Taking the hardest hit for the month were the cooking and home comfort categories, which fell 16.1 percent and 15.1 percent, respectively, when compared with the same period last year. Refrigerators and freezers fell 6.0 percent.

The home laundry category was the only one to see considerable light in December, with 1.5 million units shipping, or 14.4 percent more than the same month in 1999. Kitchen cleanup products increased 1.1 percent, compared with the year-ago period.

The so-called "AHAM 6" - washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, and freestanding and built-in ranges - grew slightly, with 3.7 million units shipping, 2.5 percent more than December 1999. The year total also grew 1.9 percent, with 38.4 million units shipping.
