Disney Joins Hulu Content Team

By TWICE Staff -- TWICE, 4/30/2009

New York — Streaming-video-content resource Hulu has formed a partnership with The Walt Disney Co. that will open the doors to some Disney movies and ABC TV shows being carried by the service, expanding on content already offered by NBC Universal and News Corp.

Under the deal, which was announced by Disney’s ABC Enterprises unit, Disney will reportedly take a 27 percent stake in the online service. That is an amount equal to the positions taken by founders NBC/Universal and News Corp. (Fox).

Disney will provide Hulu with full-length, ad-supported episodes from ABC, SoapNet and ABC Family.

Among the shows to be added through the deal are: “Lost,” “Grey's Anatomy,” “Ugly Betty” and “Scrubs.” In addition, a selection of Disney films will also appear on the site.

With the deal, Hulu expanded its range of available content, improving its attraction as a primary destination site for online video content.

It now has deals with three of the six largest movie studios.

In addition, Sony Pictures is providing some long-form, ad-supported content and Paramount is providing some TV shows and select films to Hulu.
