Vonage Gets Cash Infusion, Adds E911 Service

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 5/23/2005

VoIP provider Vonage announced that it successfully secured $200 million in financing from its investors.

The war chest will be used to “accelerate the expansion of service in the United States, Canada and the U.K” in addition to other possible international markets and for new services, the company said.

Vonage is readying two new VoIP services — a Wi-Fi phone and a videophone service — for a rollout later this year.

The company also announced a partnership with Verizon to access its wireless and wireline Enhanced 911 network. This allows Vonage to deliver both the caller's location and call back number to police in the event of a 911 call in Verizon's territory. It will be available within six months, the companies said.

Vonage had been on the receiving end of lawsuits, and threatened lawsuits, most recently from the Michigan attorney general, alleging that its existing 911 service mislead consumers. That service sent calls to a call center and could not provide the caller's location or a callback number for emergency personnel.
