OfficeMax Q2 Sales Down 11%, Same-Store Drops 7%

CLEVELAND — Office products retailer OfficeMax said the slowing U.S. economy, affecting orders for computers, desks and office stationery from small businesses, helped push second-quarter sales down about 11 percent to $978.8 million, compared with $1.1 billion in the year-ago period. Same-store sales were off 7 percent in the second quarter ended July 28. OfficeMax posted a $24 million net loss in the second three months, compared with $24.1 million in the same three months in 2000. The company predicted a return to profitability in the second half, even though it does not expect the economy to improve meaningfully before the end of 2001. Sales in the six months dropped from $2.4 billion in the first half of 2000, to $2.2 billion in this year's first six months. Net loss for the first half climbed to $40.6 million, compared with $26.2 million in the year-ago period.
