EchoStar Adding Dealers; DirecTV Keeps RadioShack

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 9/4/2000

LITTLETON, COLO. -- Days after announcing a dealership agreement with New York's P.C. Richard & Son electronics chain, EchoStar added two new retailers to the distribution base for its direct-to-home satellite systems.

The direct-broadcast satellite (DBS) system operator said it has reached deals with H.H. Gregg, a Midwestern U.S. consumer electronics retail chain based in Indianapolis, and Bradlees, a major discount-store chain based in the Northeast.

H.H. Gregg, with 33 stores, was ranked 46th among the top-selling CE retailers in 1999 by the TWICE Consumer Electronics Retail Registry. It has stores in Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee, and maintains headquarters in the backyard of Thomson, which developed the DBS small-dish system for DirecTV.

Bradlees, which ranked 55th overall among CE retailers on the TWICE Top 100 CE Retail Registry for 1999, has 105 stores in seven states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

EchoStar rival DirecTV, meanwhile, announced a new multi-year co-marketing agreement with RadioShack. The deal was said to "enhance the existing agreement" between the two companies, while providing incentives for professional installation completed by RadioShack Installation Services. The agreement includes enhanced joint advertising and promotional campaigns.

RadioShack, with 7,186 outlets across 50 states, was ranked fourth among the nation's top-selling CE retailers on the TWICE Retail Registry for 1999.
