30 New Recycling Centers Added To MRM

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 4/14/2009

Secaucus, N.J. — More than 30 drop-off centers in the Southeast have been added to the MRM Nationwide Recycling Program operated jointly by Panasonic, Sharp and Toshiba, bringing the total number of e-wasted collection centers to 310 across all 50 states, Panasonic said Tuesday.

The new drop-off locations were added in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia with plans to add additional locations in the Southeast throughout the spring, Panasonic said.

Panasonic is a partner with Toshiba and Sharp in the MRM e-waste recovery effort. Most drop-off centers in the program will accept end-of-life electronics products from the three brands free or charge to consumers.

“We appreciate Panasonic’s commitment to Product Stewardship and welcome their recycling expansion into the state of Florida,” stated Mary Jean Yon, Florida Department of Environmental Protection waste management division director.

The Nationwide Recycling Program began in November 2008 to provide consumers convenient and easy methods for recycling of their Panasonic-, Toshiba- or Sharp-branded TVs and other consumer electronics.

By January 2009, the program had 280 drop-off locations covering all 50 states. Included as drop-off sites in the program are Panasonic’s North American headquarters in Secaucus, N.J., as well as their corporate facilities in Chesapeake, Va., and Rolling Meadows, Ill. Today’s announced expansion brings the current number of drop-off locations to 310 nationwide.

Yoshi Yamada, Panasonic North American chairman/CEO, said, “We are ahead of our projected timing to reach 400 drop-off locations by December 2009, and plan to continue expanding this program with a goal of having more than 800 drop-off sites participating in the program by 2011.”
