APC Debuts 'Green' Power Products

WEST KINGSTON, R.I. — APC is riding the growing "green" electronics wave by debuting two power products that reduce energy consumption while providing surge protection to electronic components.
APC's Power-Saving SurgeArrest, a surge protector, and the APC Back-UPS ES 750, an uninterruptible power supply, feature new master/controlled outlets that actively reduce energy consumption by automatically shutting down power to unused peripherals.
When an attached computer goes into standby or hibernation mode or is turned off, the controlled outlets are automatically powered off to prevent connected peripherals from continuing to draw power. When the computer is then turned back on or wakes up, power is automatically restored to the controlled outlets. By cutting power to these "dark loads," the Back-UPS ES 750 can provide a combined savings of $40/year on average, and the Power-Saving SurgeArrest $25 on average, as compared with competitors' models, claimed APC.
The Back-UPS ES 750 offers 10 outlets, all of which provide surge protection. Five of the 10 also provide battery backup to 450 watts, which can provide up to 70 minutes of run time, depending on the load, APC said.
The unit offers coax and telephone or Ethernet protection. A data port enables communication with APC's PowerChute Personal Edition software, which powers down the computer system automatically in the event of an extended power outage.
In addition, the Back-UPS ES 750 boasts a new industrial design that uses less copper and other raw materials during the manufacturing process. The unit is compliant with the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, meaning it does not use any of the six hazardous materials banned by the directive in the manufacturing of electronics. The banned materials include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE.
The Back-UPS ES 750's packaging is made from recycled material.
APC's Power-Saving SurgeArrest offers a 6-foot extension power cord, a building wiring fault indicator, seven outlets and telephone/fax/modem protection to prevent surges traveling over data lines from reaching connected equipment. Additionally, the SurgeArrest comes with APC's $25,000 equipment protection policy for connected equipment.
Currently available in North America, the APC Back-UPS ES 750 has a suggested retail of $99.99, and the Power-Saving SurgeArrest is $34.99.
