CES 2009: Clarion Bows Marine-Grade In-Dash A/V Units

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, January 8, 2009

Clarion is debuting at International CES one of the first marine-grade in-dash DVD/monitors for the marine market as well as two new mech-less head units and Clarion's first HD Radio-ready receiver.

In addition the company is broadening distribution of its portable MiND GPS/Internet device (at $649.99).

The MiND is a mobile Internet device (MID) that offers turn-by-turn GPS, full mobile Internet access and PC functionality.

In the marine category, Clarion's CMV1 DVD/receiver has a 3.5-inch screen and USB iPod control. It plays video from all sources including an iPod (although a cable is required for iPod video). It's also splash resistant as well as both satellite radio- and Bluetooth-ready at a suggested retail of $699.

In April, Clarion plans to deliver two new AM/FM/CD-less head units, models FZ409 and FZ709, with USB iPod control that play most media devices including USB drives. The FZ709 adds built-in Bluetooth hands-free calling and A2DP audio including music streaming from an iPhone. Suggested retails are $179 and $269.

The company is also launching its first HD Radio add-on module. Called the THD309, it can receive AM/FM HD Radio and multicast stations at $99.99. The unit is also satellite radio-ready at $349. Both are expected to ship in March.
