Satellite Radio To Move Into Car Security

Staff -- TWICE, 12/6/2004

Satellite radios of the future will offer car security and concierge features such as remote door lock and unlock, said Joe Clayton, Sirius Satellite Radio's chairman of the board and former CEO.

Tom Malone¸ Audiovox's senior VP of mobile electronics, confirmed that the feature could be available “in a year or so.” He added, “Certainly with the ability to reach out to as many vehicles as satellite radio will reach, you have a communication link to these cars. Theoretically, remote door locking/unlocking would enable you to make a phone call and ask the satellite radio service to access your vehicle. You could remote-start your car or perform whatever interface you had connected to the device. That's a future progression of this product, but it's certainly one we have our eye on. We've discussed this and we think it's a good marriage of the technologies.”

XM would not confirm or deny that it is working on car security and concierge services as it does not pre-announce products or services.
