High Frame Rate SXRD Revealed

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 4/6/2007

Tokyo — Sony posted on its corporate Web site here specifications for a next-generation 1,080p SXRD microdisplay device that doubles frame-rate speeds for smoother video images in fast motion and animated sequences, while maintaining resolution.

The new high-frame-rate SXRD microdisplay is a “0.61 type full HD” (1,080p) chip carrying 2,070,000 pixels.

The technology doubles the current 60Hz SXRD frame rate to 120Hz to reduce blocking and smearing in fast motion images while maintaining 1,080p resolution. It also includes an improved liquid crystal drive speed of 240Hz to reduce or eliminate any after-image lag in animated images, according to a company release.

One of the chief changes in the new microdisplay is a newly designed silicon drive base plate, which doubles the 60Hz frame rate of the current 0.61 type full HD SXRD.

To maintain the full 1,080p resolution at the 120Hz frame rate, the device increases the bulk data transfer rate up to two times inside the device.

A resulting increase in image noise levels through this action is kept to virtually imperceptible levels of “several millivolts,” the company said, through the development of a new circuit with improved voltage stability in the entry signal.

The new 240Hz liquid crystal drive system is said to maintain the balance of effective applied voltage to the liquid crystal cell. A high-speed response time for SXRD of 2.5 milliseconds is achieved using a super narrow, thick structure cell and a new liquid crystal of 2 millimicrons or less.

A spokesman for Sony’s U.S. sales company said no further information was available at this time on plans to incorporate the device in products planned for the North American market.

The main specifications listed for the “0.61 type high frame rates SXRD” display element are the following:

  • Indicatory size: Opposite angle 1.54cm (0.61 types)

  • Picture prime: 1,920 horizontal by 1,080 vertical pixels

  • Reflectance ratio: 74 percent

  • Contrast (as a device): 5,000:1

  • Pixel pitch 2:7 millimicron

  • Pixel between space: 0.35 millimicrons

  • Speed of response: 2.5 milliseconds (startup fall respectively)

  • Orientation membrane: Inorganic orientation membrane

  • Drive element: 0.35 millimicron MOS process

  • Liquid crystal cell gap: 2 millimicrons or less.
