APC Adds Power-Saving UPS Model

By John Laposky -- TWICE, 8/18/2008

APC announced the introduction of its newly redesigned Back-UPS ES line of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), including one that senses when attached peripherals are shut off and cuts the power to reduce energy waste.

All five new models provide connected equipment with battery backup and surge protection.

At the top of the line, the Back-UPS ES 750 features SmartShedding technology which allows the product's master outlet to sense when the computer been turned off or has gone into sleep mode, so it can shut off power to any unused peripherals plugged into the controlled outlets. By cutting power to these "dark loads," the ES 750 can provide a combined savings of $40 per year on average, according to APC.

The ES 750 offers 10 surge-protected outlets, with five of the outlets also providing battery backup.

Joining the Back-UPS ES 750, the new 350, 450, 550 and 650 models feature eight surge-protected outlets, with four of the outlets also providing battery backup. There is also a 350 model that features six surge-protected outlets.

The line ranges from 200 to 450 watts of power.

The APC Back-UPS ES 650 and 750 also offer coax and telephone or Ethernet protection to prevent surges and spikes from traveling through data lines. A data port included on the 450 through 750 models enables communication with APC's PowerChute Personal Edition software, which powers down the computer system automatically in the event of an extended power outage.

The line boasts a new industrial design that minimizes their physical size and improves their aesthetic appeal, the company said.

The units are all compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) and the packaging for these new units is made from recycled material.

The line carries estimated retail prices from $44.99 to $99.99 and is currently available in North America. All models come standard with APC's lifetime equipment protection policy, which covers properly connected equipment up to $75,000.

"APC is committed to looking at new ways to increase energy efficiency across all market segments. With this in mind, APC carefully redesigned the Back-UPS ES line of uninterruptible power supplies to meet high standards of efficiency in terms of form and function," said Dave Johnson, senior VP, home and business networks, APC.
