BlackBerries To Get Voice Capability

WATERLOO, ONTARIO — Research In Motion (RIM) has reached agreements with carriers AT&T and Nextel to develop BlackBerry wireless e-mail devices that incorporate wireless voice capability.

For AT&T, RIM will develop a GSM/GPRS-enabled BlackBerry that will come with a headphone/microphone hands-free attachment to hold voice conversations. It will be marketed to AT&T corporate customers for use with BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, which redirects employee e-mails to BlackBerries. Availability and pricing weren't announced.

Nextel said its iDEN-network BlackBerry would be available in the fourth quarter but didn't say whether the microphone and earpiece would be built into the device or offered as a separate hands-free attachment.

Nextel did say the device would support Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) applications and would support Nextel's Direct Connect two-way radio service, and Wireless Web online service.
