Mac Sales Shine In Apple Q3

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 7/26/2007

Cupertino, Calif. — Apple announced a 73 percent increase in net income, totaling $818 million, citing record Mac computer sales and continued demand for the iPod.

Revenue for the third quarter, ended June 30, reached $5.4 billion, up 24 percent over the year ago quarter.

The company confirmed sales of the iPhone during the first 30 hours of its launch reached 270,000, on the low side of analyst estimates, but Apple noted that it was on track to sell 1 million iPhones by the end of September and reaffirmed its goal of hitting 10 million unit sales during 2008.

The company noted that it took the iPod almost two years to reach sales of 1 million units.

Mac sales were the shining star for the quarter, representing 60 percent of total revenue on sales of 1.76 million units, an all-time quarterly record. Mac sales grew by 33 percent over the quarter last year.

Sales of Mac notebooks grew 42 percent and comprised 64 percent of total Mac sales.

iPod sales grew 21 percent to 9.8 million units, accounting for 40 percent of total revenue.  Market share for the iPod remains at 71 percent, said the company.
