Whirlpool Recalls 2.3 Million Maytag Dishwashers

by Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 2/2/2007

Benton Harbor, Mich. — Whirlpool, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is voluntarily recalling 2.3 million Maytag and Jenn-Air dishwashers due to a possible fire hazard.

The machines were manufactured by Maytag between 1997 and 2001, prior to its acquisition by Whirlpool.

According to the CPSC, 135 dishwasher fires have been reported, resulting in four injuries. The fire hazard is related to potential leakage from liquid rinse-aids, which can short circuit the dishwashers’ internal wiring, causing it to ignite.

The recalled units are under-counter and portable plastic tub models that were sold nationwide for between $370 and $800.

Whirlpool is offering owners a free in-home repair or $75 toward the purchase of a new Maytag, Jenn-Air, Whirlpool or KitchenAid dishwasher. Consumers have been advised to disconnect the units immediately. Dealers are not accepting returns.
