Blu-ray Discs Bowed From Maxell

Fair Lawn, N.J. — Maxell Corporation of America announced today that it will begin shipping 8cm Blu-ray BD-R write-once and BD-RE rewritable discs for the HD camcorder market.

The 8cm single-layer Blu-ray BD-R and BD-RE discs are designed to be compatible with the most recent Blu-ray camcorders, providing a recording capacity of 7.5GB and allowing the disc to store one hour of full high-definition picture quality at 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, according to the company. They feature a hard-coat layer to protect the recording surface.

The discs are scheduled to become available this month, and the release timing is meant to coincide with Hitachi's new Blu-ray camcorder, said Maxell. Discs will retail for $24.99 for the write-once single-sided disc and $34.99 for the rewritable version.
