Audiovox Expands GSM, PocketPC Portfolio

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 5/24/2004

Hauppauge, N.Y. — Audiovox Communications expanded its selection of GSM phones and PocketPC phones with the introduction of the PPC 4100, a GSM/GPRS PocketPC phone that will be available through AT&T Wireless channels in June at $349 after $50 instant rebate.

The PPC 4100 will be sold in retail outlets across the country.

The device joins the PPC5050 dual-band CDMA 1x EV-DO phone, which was launched at CES with Microsoft’s PocketPC Phone Edition software and is available in Canada. The company’s first GSM phone, the GX28, was also launched at CES but hasn’t shipped to any carriers.

For its part, the new PPC 4100 is a triband (850/1800/1900 MHs) GSM/GPRS Pocket PC phone with 400MHz, Intel XScale processor, 64MB RAM, 64 ROM, and built-in SD/MMC expansion slot. It enables wireless access to corporate e-mail and POP3 e-mail accounts when used with Exchange Server 2003 or AT&T-approved solutions from Good Technology.

The device can be used with AT&T Wireless’s Office Online solution to access work e-mail, calendar and contacts without getting a company’s IT department involved.

The device also features Windows Media Player 9 for audio and video playback and improved SMS (short message service) integration. When an SMS message is received, the device will search its Contacts database for the sender’s phone number, then display display the sender's name if there is a match. Users will get the option to call back the sender.

Intel XScale processors are low-power processors with stepped up multimedia performance for wireless clients.
