Samsung, Microsoft Kick Off Hope For Education Contest

Samsung launched its fourth annual Hope For Education national online essay contest at an event here April 11 with partner Microsoft, expanding the program to Spanish essays and having Hollywood Records recording artists Aly & AJ as the contest spokespersons.

The contest runs until July 22 with information on how to register at www.hopeforeducation.com. Awards will be announced by the end of the year.

D.J. Oh, president/CEO of Samsung Electronics, and Anthony Salcito, GM of U.S. education at Microsoft, said during the launch event at the Samsung Experience, here, that the awards will include $1 million in Samsung products and $1 million in Microsoft software.

The one grand prize will be $100,000 in Samsung products and $100,000 in Microsoft software. There will be 30 first prizes of $30,000 Samsung products and $30,000 of Microsoft software and 31 individual winning essay writers, who will receive a Samsung UMPC.

Each year the program asks students, teachers, parents or anyone who knows of a school in need to write an essay regarding the importance of technology in education and how it can benefit a school in their community.

Essays are evaluated by an Advisory Council that includes: Wharton School, Cornell University, TWICE, USA Today, AASA (American Association of School Administrators), Univision and El Diario.

In the three previous years the program has awarded over $5 million in Samsung electronics and Microsoft software to 226 U.S. schools. Last year there were more than 8,000 submissions.
