Wink Communications Boosts Interactive Television Service
ALAMEDA, CALIF. —Wink Communications, a provider of interactive TV technology and services, increased its Wink-enabled satellite and cable households in North America five times, to 2.5 million customers, during the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31. Net revenue for the fourth quarter was $1.7 million, a 240 percent increase over the $512,000 recorded in same three months in 1999. Net loss for the quarter was $14.6 million, up from the $4.5 million recorded in the year-ago period. Net revenue for the year was $4.3 million, a 171 percent increase over the $1.6 million recorded in the same three months a year ago. Net loss for the year reached $33.3 million, up from $18.2 million a year ago.
Royal Enjoys Record Sales
CLEVELAND —Royal Appliance, maker of Dirt Devil floor-care products, announced record net sales for the year ending Dec. 31. However, the $408.22 million posted was relatively flat, compared with the $407.98 million recorded in 1999. Net income for the year was $5.9 million, compared with $12.7 million the previous year. This year's results include a $930,000 research and development tax credit related to prior years. In the fourth quarter, Royal's net sales dropped about 4 percent to $126.5 million, down from $131.8 million in the year-ago fourth quarter. Net income was $3 million, down about 19 percent, compared with the $3.7 million reported in the same three months last year. The 1999 fourth-quarter results included a non-cash charge of $2.6 million before taxes. Royal attributed record sales in 1999 and 2000 to a strong consumer response to its line of upright vacuums and carpet shampooers.
Pegasus Q4 Net Doubles, But Loss Jumps 46%
BALA CYNWYD, PA. —Multichannel video provider Pegasus Communications reported a 105 percent climb in net revenue for the fourth quarter, reaching $201.5 million, compared with $98.1 million in the year-ago period. Revenue does not include results of the company's discontinued cable operations, which were sold last September. The company's loss for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31 increased $23.5 million to $73.9 million, or 46 percent. Net revenue for the 12 months was up 91 percent to $617.5 million, compared with $322.8 million in 1999. Net loss for the year was virtually the same as in 1999, coming in at $201.8 million, compared with $201.5 million.
VoiceStream Reports $1.9B Fiscal-Year 2000 Revenue
BELLEVUE, WASH. —VoiceStream Wireless reported $392 million in subscriber revenue for the fourth quarter, a 224 percent increase over the same quarter in 1999. Total service revenue for the fourth quarter was $503 million, up 303 percent over the year-ago quarter. Fourth-quarter net subscriber additions reached 602,000. For the year, subscriber revenue was $1.2 billion, a 222 percent increase over 1999. Total service revenue was $1.5 billion for 2000, a 304 percent jump over the previous year. Total revenue for fiscal 2000 hit $1.9 billion, a 304 percent increase over 1999. The company, however, extended its net loss for the fourth quarter to $809 million, up from $152 million in the same three months the previous year. The net loss for the year reached $2.1 billion, compared with a net loss of $455 million in 1999.
