Delphi To Produce HD Radio Car Stereos In '04

Detroit — iBiquity announced Delphi Corp. has licensed its HD Radio digital radio technology. Delphi is expected to offer the new digital radios to automakers in 2004.
HD Radio, iBiquity's In-Band On-Channel (IBOC) technology, improves FM sound to CD quality and improves AM sound to FM quality, says the company. Broadcasters are expected to begin transmitting in HD Radio this quarter in 11 markets (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Seattle). At present Radio One, based in Lanham, Md., and operating 65 radio stations, is the only broadcaster that has announced it is on the air with HD Radio. HD Radio receivers for consumers should be on retail shelves in spring 2003, said a spokesman. Other HD Radio licensees include Alpine, Harman Kardon, Kenwood, Sanyo, Visteon and Yamaha.
