W-CDMA Voice Call Made

REDMOND, WASH. — AT&T Wireless said it and Ericsson completed the first live 3G W-CDMA (UMTS) voice call in the United States as part of a testing process.

"AT&T Wireless can and will deliver true 3G services to our customers on schedule, as planned," said Rod Nelson, chief technology officer for AT&T Wireless.

The wideband radio technology delivers data rates up to 2Mbps, enabling simultaneous access to everything from regular voice telephony to a range of content-rich, multimedia services. For example, users will be able to watch a video clip while receiving an e-mail.

The company said it's the seventh largest carrier based on potential customers covered by its licenses. The carrier operates in 39 markets in 20 states.
