Sprint Nextel Sets WiMAX Soft Launch

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 9/3/2007

Sprint Nextel announced a soft launch of mobile WiMAX service to kick off in the Chicago and Baltimore/Washington markets by the end of the year, to be followed by a broader launch in 2008.

The new service called Xohm (pronounced Zoam) places Sprint Nextel two years ahead of competitors in bringing broadband into the mobile market, said the company.

Initially the service is expected to be used as air cards for notebook PCs, said a spokesman. Eventually WiMAX will be used for a wide array of consumer products including gaming devices, cameras and voice devices.

Additional areas expected to receive WiMAX in 2008 include Boston; Providence, R.I.; New York; Pittsburgh; Cleveland; Cincinnati; Detroit; St. Louis; Kansas City, Mo.; Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, Texas; Phoenix; Los Angeles and San Diego; Las Vegas; and Tampa, Fla.
