Metra Distributes Bassforms

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 5/5/2008

Bassforms, which claims it is the only supplier of 100 percent fiberglass subwoofer enclosures, said that Metra Electronics will become its exclusive distributor as of May 1.

Bassforms said it will no longer carry out distribution for its enclosures, but will rely exclusively on Metra.

Bassforms recently began shipping its first "loaded" amplified subwoofer enclosures that are formed of fiberglass and are designed to fit in the back corners of trunks to leave trunk space when desired. The company claims its enclosures provide superior volume because the rounded corners of fiberglass allow more enclosure space than the right angled corners of wood and plastic. The density of the fiberglass also contributes to performance, said Nick Saati, sales and marketing VP.

"We're the first people to mass-produce 100 percent fiberglass enclosures. Others have used mixed wood and fiberglass or plastic," he said.

The company claims to offer 150 designs, two-thirds of which are vehicle specific and the remainder are universal. It can accommodate custom fabrics, carpet, vinyl and leather to match the trunk.

The new loaded enclosures include a built-in mini amplifier at power ratings from 300 to 500 watts RMS. They have a black-gloss finish and are able to fit the top-selling 30 vehicles, said Saati. Suggested retails range from $399 to $999.
