Motient Expands Wireless-Data Net

Staff -- TWICE, 2/11/2002

Motient said it expanded its two-way, wireless packet-data network to become the only wireless-data network to operate in all 276 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs).

With the expansion into the Yuma, Ariz., MSA, Motient said its footprint of 2,275 base stations deliver service to 30 percent more people than its nearest competitor, or more than 220 million people in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Additionally, the network serves all of the 520 most populated U.S. cities; all of the nation's top 100 airports, and many miles of Amtrak's high-capacity corridors.

Motient, which has filed a pre-negotiated Chapter 11 plan, said its network delivers transmission speeds of 19.2kbps, but in some areas such as New York City, layered cells deliver an effective throughput of 81.6kbps.
