Good Guys Opens Convergence Prototype

Staff -- TWICE, 3/22/2004

The first, most visible fruits of Good Guys' December acquisition by CompUSA were unveiled earlier this month when the A/V specialty chain opened its debut "convergence" store here.

The prototype reflects Good Guys' post-merger plan to play off CompUSA's PC strengths by re-assorting its stores with computers and connectivity-type products. According to recently named president Cathy Stauffer, the company had begun testing convergence concepts at its Reno location late last year with 33 new SKUs and was encouraged by the results: a 4 percent to 5 percent gain in comparable store sales without any advertising announcing the new mix (see TWICE, Feb. 9, p. 20).

By the time the store officially reopened on March 5, this time with gala promotions, it had been retrofitted to accommodate over 1,000 computer and computer-related products in addition to its core A/V assortment, including monitors, printers, software, PDAs, digital cameras and accessories.

Stauffer said the chain "wants to learn what works" before taking the concept system-wide.
