Sales Of Vacuum Cleaners, Air Purifiers Fell In 4th Quarter

Staff -- TWICE, 1/29/2001

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. - Unit sales of vacuum cleaners and air purifiers fell 4.9 percent between Thanksgiving and Christmas, while dollar volume for the categories dropped 12.5 percent, according to NPD Intelect Market Tracking.

By contrast, category sales rose 13.4 percent in units and 7.3 percent in dollars during January through November 2000.

"These numbers support reports that our economy experienced a sudden downturn late in the year," said NPD Intelect director of appliances Donna Wallace. "Of all the categories we looked at, only a half dozen showed some growth last holiday season compared to 1999. Yet the year 2000, prior to the holiday season, was on the whole positive."

NPD Intelect Market Tracking is a provider of sales tracking services for CE, home appliances, information technology and imaging industries. Data are collected from comprehensive panels representing each industry's key retail channel. Panels include such merchants as Best Buy, Kmart, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart.

In a related development, the industry trade group International Housewares Association (IHA), which sponsors the International Housewares Show, has selected NPD HomeTrak and NPD Intelect services as its sole housewares and home appliance retail sales tracking information suppliers.

Under the agreement, The NPD Group will provide IHA and the U.S. housewares industry with proprietary housewares and home appliance retail sales data.

Specifically, NPD HomeTrak, NPD's housewares tracking unit, and NPD Intelect, the home appliance and consumer electronics tracking unit, will supply IHA with quarterly updated retail sales tracking market data for publication in the association's newsletter, Housewares Marketwatch, and for posting on www.housewares.org.
