Stauffer Leaves Good Guys For Gateway

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 5/11/2004

San Francisco — Good Guys veteran Cathy Stauffer left her post as retail president of the West Coast specialty A/V chain earlier this month to become senior VP/marketing for Gateway.

No successor at Good Guys was named.

In her new role at the recently reorganized Gateway, Stauffer will oversee all retail, consumer, professional and brand marketing functions, the company said. She will report directly to Wayne Inouye, who himself was recently named president/CEO following Gateway’s acquisition of eMachines in March.

"Cathy brings a tremendous amount of experience to our leadership team," Inouye said in a statement. "I am confident that she will have an immediate impact on our marketing efforts as we continue to hone our channel strategy and bolster our… product lineup."

Gateway recently shut its retail stores to avoid channel conflict in its efforts to market Gateway-branded PCs and CE products to other specialty chains including Best Buy and Circuit City.

Stauffer, one of the top female CE retail executives in the country, joined Good Guys in 1977 and, over the ensuing 20 years, held posts of increased responsibility, including VP/marketing, VP/merchandising and executive VP.

She was promoted to president of Good Guys Retail this past January following the departure of chairman/CEO Ken Weller. The personnel changes came on the heels of CompUSA’s $55 million acquisition of Good Guys in December.

A spokesperson for CompUSA described her departure as "abrupt," but would not comment on when or if Stauffer’s former position would be filled.
