TAW Shows 'Evolution' LCoS Projector

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 9/30/2002

High-end home theater manufacturer TAW used CEDIA to introduce a high-performance LCoS front projector and a new video processor in its "Rock" series.

The three-chip LCoS projector, which is dubbed the Evolution Digital Projector, features 1,365 by 1,024 (SXGA) resolution and incorporates an internal anamorphic lens allowing all three of the 4:3 aspect ratio LCoS panels to be used on 16:9 aspect ratio screens.

The unit has a special DVI input designed to work with TAWs ROCK video processor capable of transmitting in lengths up to 100 feet.

The projector also features an unusual aluminum cabinet design, unlike most competitive models, which use plastic cases.

TAW said it tests and calibrates every projector at its factory for a linear 6500K colorimetry from 10 IRE to 100 IRE.

Brightness is rated at 600 ANSI lumens, while sound emission levels are 26 dB at 1 meter, which the company claims as "one of the quietest digital projectors available."

Further, the projector is upgradeable to 1,920 by 1,080p resolution. TAW offers the projector with its ROCK video processor at a $25,000 suggested retail price.

The company also announced its new ROCK PRO (shipping in November at a $7,500 suggested retail) processor featuring PixelPerfect deinterlacing technology and motion compensation. The unit features "infinite input" capability, enabling additional inputs to be added "in the field." It will process both standard- and high-definition images.
