Toshiba, Sony Add Notebooks

Toshiba introduced two new models in its P15 Satellite notebook series, while Sony has rolled out three new lines.

The Toshiba P15-S420 and P15-S470 are higher-end models based on the 3GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with HyperThreading Technology. Each has a 15.4-inch LCD. Both started shipping on Feb. 3.

The P15-S470, estimated street price $2,199, is Toshiba's latest model to incorporate the Windows Media Center operating system, giving the model PVR and television-viewing capability. Other features include a 60GB hard drive, 512MB of DDR SDRAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX Go2500 graphics card with 64MB of memory, a DVD Multi drive and 802.11g/a networking.

The P15-S420 has an $1,899 estimated street price and differs by dropping the Media Center OS, but adding a dual-format DVD burner and having a 80GB hard drive.

Sony's newest series are the PCG-TR3AP3, PCG-V505EX andPCG-Z1WA. The TR3AP3 is the company's smallest and lightest unit, 1.4-inches thick and weighing 3.1 pounds, to incorporate a DVD burner, in the form of a DVD-RW drive. Its features include an Intel 1GHz Ultra Low Voltage Pentium M processor, 1GB of DDR SDRAM, a 40GB hard drive, 10.6-inch LCD and 802.11b/g wireless-networking capability. A model with this configuration will carry a $3,000 suggested retail price, but the base model will start at $1,600.

The V505EX has a slightly faster 1.5GHz Pentium M, but comes with half the amount of RAM as the TR3AP3. Other features include an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 32MB graphics card, CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, 802.11b/g wireless networking, 60GB hard drive and a 12.1-inch LCD. The V505EX weighs in at 4.4 pounds and suggested retail prices start at $1,900.

The Z1WA is slightly larger then its sister models, tipping the scales at 4.7 pounds, but comes with an 1.7GHz Pentium M processor, 14.1-inch LCD, 512MB of memory, 60GB hard drive, 802.11b/g networking and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. Prices start at $2,300.
