TiVo Offers Amazon Video-Download Service

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 4/21/2009

Alviso, Calilf. — TiVo said Tuesday that it has started making available HD movies and television shows for download from Amazon.com directly to broadband-connected TiVo boxes for playback on television sets.

Starting now, broadband-connected subscribers with a Series3, TiVo HD or TiVo HD XL box will have access to high-quality HD downloads available from Amazon Video On Demand, TiVo said.

Amazon said the HD services will also be available through partners Roku, which sells broadband connected set-top boxes, and through Panasonic TV sets with IPTV functionality.
The service will offer hundreds of selections, including high-definition episodes of current TV seasons, which will be available for purchase at $2.99, and new-release HD movies, which will be available for rental from $3.99 to $4.99.

A majority of the titles will also be offered with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.

“Consumers are seeking affordable entertainment alternatives to an expensive trip to the movies. With HD downloads for movies and TV shows, TiVo and Amazon can transform any night into a memorable movie experience, all for a fraction of the cost of the theater,” stated Tara Maitra, TiVo content services VP and general manager. “Our customers now have access to a new world of ultra-high-quality HD television and movie choices, many of which are available when the DVDs are released, something no other DVR, cable, or satellite company can match.”

TiVo Search will include HD results from Amazon along with broadcast and cable programs when a user performs a search.

To activate a broadband-connected TiVo DVR, subscribers can log onto Amazon.com at www.amazon.com/videoondemand/tv.

After a one-time registration, users can access the remote to search and browse the Amazon selections, then download the selection to the TiVo DVR.
