GE Gives Free Repairs For Recalled Washers

LOUISVILLE, KY. – Under urging from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), GE has begun offering free repairs on more than 3 million hazardous GE and Hotpoint dishwashers to supplement a year-old recall/rebate program.

The products, manufactured between April 1983 and January 1989, have a slide switch for the “heated dry/energy saver” function that can melt and ignite. About 90 incidents of fire, smoking and melted switches have been reported, including 14 involving fires that spread beyond the dishwashers. No injuries have been reported.

GE agreed to recall the defective units last year and continues to offer consumers rebates of up to $125 toward GE replacement models in exchange for their old dishwashers. Under the latest provision, consumers can also opt to have the faulty circuit removed by an authorized technician at no cost.
