Samsung Sets Price, Ship Date For LCD Fridge

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. –

Samsung Electronics
America has priced its four-door, Energy
Star-rated LCD refrigerator to
carry a suggested $3,499 retail when
it begins hitting sales floors late next
month.

Its RF4289 fridge, which debuted
at International CES in January, offers
28 cubic feet of storage, including
a customizable, counter-height
“flex-zone” drawer with a moveable
divider.

Other features include LED lighting
and Samsung’s signature twin coolingplus
system that separately circulates
the air within the freezer and refrigerator
compartments to eliminate odor transfer
and keep perishable produce fresher
longer.

But the main point of differentiation
is an 8-inch, Wi-Fi-enabled LCD touchscreen
embedded above the ice and
water dispenser. The display provides
a host of apps, including Epicurious
(recipe collections), Weatherbug and
Pandora, as well as AP News, Google
Calendar, Picasa Photos and
Twitter.

The touchscreen can also be
used to write notes.

The RF4289 represents the majap piece of Samsung’s
new Nth-Screen strategy,
which stresses “seamless connectivity”
and content sharing across
“limitless screens” both in and outside
the home.

Samsung majap marketing director
Kurt Jovais told TWICE that the
refrigerator’s rollout will be heralded
by a new TV campaign, following
the late April launch of a new
laundry product. The manufacturer
will also add its proprietary PowerFoam
feature, which combines
water, air and detergent to create a
deep-cleaning foam, to all Samsung
washers priced more than $1,000.

Samsung’s appliance business has
grown six-fold over the last five years,
and its washers and refrigerators have
been rated No. 1 in customer satisfaction
by J.D. Power & Associates, the
company said. Jovais added that the
RF4289’s predecessor, which shares
the same feature set except for the
touchscreen, is the best-selling fourdoor
refrigerator in the U.S.,
with a 6 percent share of that
market.
