Samsung Joins Appliance Parade At Int’l CES

LAS VEGAS —

Samsung, like Korean competitor LG, comingled a wide selection
of major appliances with its CE introductions at International CES earlier this
month.

The company, noted David Steel, senior VP of North American headquarters
marketing, is among the top three majap makers in the U.S. market, thanks to its
No. 1 position in the premium French door refrigerator category.

To press its point, Samsung showed at its booth a pair of CES 2011 Innovations
Award winners within the eco-design category: the high-efficiency and highcapacity
5-cubic-foot WF520 front-load washer, which is already on the market,
and the new Flex FE710DRS oven range, which can be divided into two separate
oven chambers.

Samsung described the Flex as the world’s first 30-inch freestanding electric
range whose cavity can be segmented. Customers can use the full 5.9-cubic-foot
oven chamber or segment it into 2.6-cubic-foot top and 3.1-cubic-foot bottom
chambers. The chambers can be used individually or in tandem, allowing dinner
and dessert to cook simultaneously without blending aromas or tastes.

Both chambers are housed behind the single exterior oven door, and when not
in use, the oven divider can be discreetly stored in a space above the 1.4-cubicfoot
warming drawer.

Flex’s other features include a five burner ceramic cooktop with one triple burner
and one dual fast-boil burner, as well as a dual convection system that quickly
and evenly preheats the oven in single mode, and permits convection cooking in
both chambers when in dual oven mode, resulting in more even cooking/baking
and reduced pre-heating.

The Flex will be available in March starting at a suggested $1,600 retail.

Elsewhere, Samsung introduced new 30-cubic-foot RSG309 side-by-side
and 28-cubic-foot RF4289 four-door refrigerators featuring Wi-Fi-enabled LCD
screens to access apps in the kitchen.

The 8-inch LCD screens are integrated directly above the water and ice dispenser
on the front of the fridges, and provide access to a series of kitchenrelated
apps, including Epicurious, for recipe collections, and WeatherBug, for
weather conditions.

The fridges also feature Samsung’s signature twin cooling plus system that keeps
perishable produce fresher, longer. Both models will be available later this year.

“These new innovations bring the wow of cutting-edge technology and flexible
design together to simplify daily routines and delight consumers by making their
lives easier,” said home appliance sales and marketing senior VP James Politeski.

Samsung said it also fully supports the smart grid initiative and will soon begin
to roll out products that can efficiently manage power consumption.
