French Door Fridges Fight On Black Friday

NEW YORK –

Continuing a recent trend, major appliances
held a prominent place in Black Friday promotional
calendars last month.

This year, French-style refrigerators from Whirlpool
and Samsung were the footballs of choice, with doorbuster
pricing of $1,200 appearing as early as mid-
November at The Home Depot.

Best Buy responded on Black Friday with a 25.8-cubic-
foot, three-door fridge from Samsung for $1,200,
while a step-up four-door model with external ice and
water and 28 cubic feet of space retailed for $2,000, a
33 percent savings for each, the retailer said.

Lowe’s, which fired the first volley with a $1,300
three-door Whirlpool Gold refrigerator earlier in November,
took another $100 off on Black Friday, for a
reported savings to shoppers of $700.

Home Depot took the opposite tack, raising its mid-
November pricing on a 25-cubic-foot Maytag Ice2O
three-door fridge a hundred bucks to $1,298, which
still allowed customers to pocket over $600 in savings
on Thanksgiving weekend.

Sears, which had mounted aggressive promotions
throughout the year, simply matched Home Depot with
a 25-cubic-foot three-door Kenmore model at $1,300.

Beating all of national chains on three-door pricing
was hhgregg, which offered up a 25.5-cubic-foot
Whirlpool fridge with a satina finish and external ice
and water for $1,000 on Black Friday, a 54 percent
savings from the “suggested retail price” of $2,200.

Seventh-ranked majap chain P.C. Richard & Son sat out the French
door fray. Its
lowest-priced
three-door, from
Samsung, retailed
for $1,500
on Black Friday.
Instead, the New
York metro-area
powerhouse led
off with a topload
washer and
companion dryer
under Whirlpool’s
Estate brand for
$225 each.

Like P.C., laundry
pairs were
featured on the
front covers of
nearly all of the
largest majap
chains’ Black Friday
circulars.
Lowe’s also highlighted
top loaders from Whirlpool, at $698 for the pair,
while Sears, Home Depot and hhgregg each featured
front loaders under the Kenmore, LG and Maytag badges,
respectively.

By contrast, Best Buy buried its appliance deals on
pages 22 and 23 of its 24-page doorbuster insert, where
it featured an $800 side-by-side and $450 electric oven,
both from Frigidaire, alongside its Samsung French door
doorbuster.
