F&P Readies Cooktop For U.S.

Fisher & Paykel will make its entry into the U.S. cooking appliance market early next year, in the New Zealand-based company’s fourth quarter. At last month’s Kitchen/Bath Industry Show, Fisher & Paykel executives were telling retailers about plans for a 36-inch gas cooktop with 14,000 Btu burner, expected here early in 2000.

Mike Goadby, president of the firm’s U.S. subsidiary, told TWICE the cooktop is expected to sell in the $899-to-$999 range. Pyrolytic ovens in the 27- and 30-inch sizes are due in the U.S. later next year.

“That starts us on the cooking trail in the U.S.,” Goadby said. “Cooking products are huge for Fisher & Paykel in Australia and New Zealand.” Convection ovens and multifunction cooking appliances are also planned further down the road. Goadby said the company has scrubbed plans to market a line of outsourced refrigerators in the U.S. Instead, he said, “we’ve decided the products we should sell here we should make ourselves.”
