DOE To Begin Energy Standard Phase-In

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will begin a five-year phase-in this year of tough new energy standards affecting 22 residential and commercial appliances including dishwashers, ranges and dryers.

The new requirements could eventually save the equivalent of the energy consumed by an estimated 12 million households, cutting consumers’ energy bills and reducing the need to build additional power plants whose carbon dioxide emissions contribute to global warming.

Congress set initial minimum efficiency standards for majaps in 1987 and ordered the DOE to strengthen them periodically. The latest round of standards was prompted by a lawsuit filed by 15 states, the City of New York and three public interest groups against the DOE last year for failing to comply with the Congressional mandate.
