Sony Streamlines Its Corporate Management

TOKYO — Top executive changes continue at Sony Corporation, with a new executive management structure which centralizes responsibility between current president/CEO Nobuyki Idei and two other top executives.

Pending approval by the board and at the annual meeting on June 29, Idei now becomes chairman and CEO while Kunitake Ando, executive deputy president and chief operating officer, has been named president and chief operating officer. Teruhisa Tokunaka continues as executive deputy president and chief financial officer.

Norio Ohga, currently corporate chairman, will become chairman of the board, a new position. The title of corporate chairman will be abolished.

Minoru Morio and Tamotsu Iba, who are both currently executive deputy presidents, have each been given the title of vice-chairman. Kunitake Ando, president and chief operating officer of the Sony Personal IT Network Company, and Ken Kutaragi, president and chief operating officer of Sony Computer Entertainment Company, have been named board directors.

These moves were made to streamline Sony operations and help the company take advantage of its expertise in its electronics and entertainment businesses, so it can capitalize on the emerging markets for e-business and Internet-related ventures.

These moves come little more than a month since Sony Electronics in the United States created the Consumer Electronics Group, naming Fujio Nishida president. Soon after, Nishida was also named president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics, replacing Teri Aoki, who returned to corporate headquarters. An announcement on the replacement for Nishida as president of the Sony Consumer Electronics Group will be made soon, according to a company spokesperson.
