NEC Goes Retail With LCD PC/TV Monitors

NEC Display Solutions will introduce three large-screen LCD PC monitors that it will release into the custom install and high-end audio retail markets.

The December launch of the M40 and M46 40W-inch and 46W-inch displays will mark the first time NEC will attempt to sell LCD TV/PC displays into a retail environment for consumers, said Tim Dreyer, NEC marketing communications manager. The 57W-inch M57 is expected to ship during the first quarter next year. Product pricing was not announced.

The units are equipped with digital and analog tuners and have 1,080p screen resolution along with all the basic TV and PC ports and connections, including Ethernet, so it can be directly hooked to a Media Center PC, Dreyer said. In addition, a slot has been included on the sides of the displays for consumers to add a wireless module at a later date when that technology becomes more widely used with televisions.

All three models are based on NEC’s commercial LCD models normally used in public places, Dreyer said. The benefits of using this design, he said, is the 360-degree ventilation required of commercial sets, which eliminates screen degradation and gives longer light to the backlight bulb.
