Kodak Cameras Ready For Holidays

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — To help customers get fully equipped for holiday-season picture taking, Kodak introduced last week the entry-level digital camera model DC3200.

The 1-megapixel DC3200 carries a $250 suggested retail price and will hit stores in time for consumers to pick one up before the holidays start, said Philip Gerskovich, VP of Kodak’s digital and applied imaging.

The camera features a 1.6-inch LCD, 2MB of internal memory and 2x optical zoom, and it has a CompactFlash card slot. The CompactFlash card is sold for $59.95.

NPD Intelect, Port Washington, N.Y., is predicting a robust holiday selling season for digital cameras.

NPD analyst Neil Portnoy said the primary problem will be whether vendors can obtain the components needed to meet the expected high demand.

NPD is predicting digital camera sales will increase by more than 100 percent in the coming year and dollar sales will continue to climb despite price drops.

The company estimates that sales will rise 127 percent, with 4.2 million units shipping by the end of 2000, compared to 1.8 million shipped in 1999.

For the first half of the year Kodak was the third leading supplier of digital cameras, according to NPD, with 15.7 percent of unit share. Sony and Olympus topped the list, with unit shares of 32.7 percent and 19.9 percent, respectively.
