The Home Of The Near Future

A Free-moving Telephone from Philips’ “La Casa Prossima Futura: The Home Of The Near Future” exhibit at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. This is one of many devices and gadgets from a not-so-distant future envisioned by Philips and Stefano Marzano, managing director, Philips Design. “The new digital appliances, tools, and control systems will become, in essence, the new cooks, assistants, colleagues and even pets,” he said. “They will recognize us, notice our habits, our likes and dislikes, and adapt their behavior and their services accordingly.” The Free-moving Telephone can be placed on a bedside table and a sleepy telephone call recipient doesn’t have to worry about knocking it over. It is designed so that it will always return to the vertical position. The exhibit is on display through Oct. 9, 1999, on Saks’ newly rebuilt ninth floor.
