Epson introduced its first portable document
scanner, the WorkForce DS-30.
The DS-30 is about 18-inches long and can scan
paper, business cards, credit and ID cards at a 600
by 600 resolution, said Mark Pickard, Epson’s product
manager for document scanners.
The scanner will carry a $179 suggested retail price and
hit stores in March. Initially it will sell through office superstores,
but other types could be added at a later date.
Pickard said the portable scanner market is the fastest
growing segment in the scanner category experiencing
321 percent growth in 2011 over 2010. He
attributed this growth to several factors. The federal
requirement that all medical records be digitized has
forced this profession to buy document scanners and
many companies are replacing fax machines with scanners
that have scan to fax or to email capability.
The DS-30 works with Google Docs, SharePoint and
Evernote for its scan to cloud functionality. Like all Epson
scanners it features a TWAIN interface, which is
required by the specialty software found in the medical,
real estate and logistics fields. Pickard said TWAIN is
not normally included in a low-priced scanner, but it
was requested by several software publishers.
